Since the launch of the 4.7 and 5.5-inch iPhone 6 and 6 Plus in September of 2014, there have been rumors suggesting Apple plans to introduce a new 4-inch device aimed at those who want something both more affordable and smaller in size. Despite rumors, no new device materialized in 2015, but as of 2016, rumors have ramped up and it appears a new 4-inch iPhone could launch in the near future.
For several months, rumors about the 4-inch iPhone were all over the place, perhaps as Apple itself worked to solidify a design and internal specs. With parts for the device now rumored to be in production, we’re beginning to get a clearer picture of what we can expect from the 4-inch iPhone.
Said to be called the “iPhone 5se,” the new device is reportedly modeled after the iPhone 5s. The name is meant to denote its position as a second-generation upgraded version of the iPhone 5s. Earlier rumors about the 4-inch iPhone said it could be similar to the iPhone 5c, leading the media to refer to 4-inch device as the “iPhone 6c” over the past year. iPhone 6c and iPhone 5se rumors refer to the same 4-inch device Apple is developing.
Rumors suggest the iPhone 5se will be the same size as the iPhone 5s, similar enough that the two phones will be able to share cases and other accessories. It may take a couple design cues from Apple’s flagship iPhone 6s, though, adopting a curved cover glass that does away with the shiny bezels around the edge of the existing iPhone 5s.
When taking into account all of the different rumors we’ve heard, the iPhone 5se may be on par with Apple’s larger-screened devices when it comes to performance, but it’s not going to share all of the same features as Apple’s flagship devices. Internally, the iPhone 5se is likely to have the same A9 processor used in the iPhone 6s, but it may be limited to 1GB RAM and it may only come in 16 and 64GB capacities, with no 128GB option. It may look like a cross between an iPhone 6 and an iPhone 5s, adopting internal parts from both the iPhone 6 and the iPhone 6s.
The iPhone 5se is said to use the same 8-megapixel rear camera found in the iPhone 6, along with a 1.2-megapixel front-facing camera. It’s rumored to include improved autofocusing, support for larger panoramas, and the ability to capture Live Photos. While it can take Live Photos, the iPhone 5se will not be receiving 3D Touch because 3D Touch is a flagship feature in the iPhone 6s.
Like all of Apple’s recent iPhones, the iPhone 5se will include an NFC chip and Touch ID to support the company’s Apple Pay payment service. It will also include the latest iPhone features like Bluetooth 4.2, fast 802.11ac WiFi, and VoLTE. Rumors suggest it could have a 1,624 mAh battery, which is larger than the battery in the iPhone 5s.
The iPhone 5se will be available in the same colors as the iPhone 5s, offered in Silver, Gold, and Space Gray. It’s also possible Apple will sell the device in Rose Gold, the new color introduced with the iPhone 6s. As for pricing, rumors out of China suggest the entry-level device could be priced at around $560.
While rumors have disagreed on several prospective features for Apple’s 4-inch iPhone, they all agree that the device will be released early in 2016. Apple is currently planning to hold an event that’s scheduled totake place on March 15, which is when we may see the debut of the iPhone 5se.
The alleged 4-inch iPhone in the image matches rumors that the device will have a curved cover glass like the iPhone 6 and 6s, but it clashes with rumors suggesting the 4-inch iPhone will adopt an iPhone 5s design.
Because we can’t confirm the veracity of the image, it should be viewed with some skepticism until additional design images of the 4-inch iPhone become available. It is unlikely to be an actual functional iPhone, but it could be a design mockup used by case makers. There’s also a possibility that it is a fake device altogether.
